Anonymous asked: Hey, so I wanted to ask. I have a cold and flu really often, so when this happens, I don't know what to eat (and I can't train). So what do you recommend to eat, when you're sick?

Typically, I decide to workout or not based on how I feel. If I feel achy, tired, and congested- I’ll just grab some tea and sleep all day. If I have cold symptoms but have a lot of energy, I’ll go for a light jog or something. When I’m sick I eat loads of soup (I love to pick up Thai and Vietnamese soups or I’ll make traditional chicken noodle and tomato- I try to stick to soups with lots of veggies. Fluids are most important when sick, keep hydrated with water, tea, orange juice, sparkling water, etc.

However- I didn’t want to steer you in the wrong direction about exercising when sick so I found an article called, Under the weather: what are the protocols for exercising while sick? from the Journal of American Fitness. To sum up the article:

- Continuing vigourous exercise when sick can lead to complications

- Vigorous exercise takes a toll on your already hard-working immune system

- If you chose to workout while sick, monitor your heart rate and keep it below 110 (this means light-moderate exercise only)

- Doctor’s advice is to stop working out for a day and focus on giving your body rest

- When you start to feel better and have more energy, resume your regular workout

- In general, follow your body’s cues when you’re sick. If you are very tired and have a fever, your body is trying to tell you it needs rest

- Exercise on a regular basis (when you’re not sick!) can help strengthen your immune response so you get sick less often

- Women who walked briskly 35-45 mins 5x a week had half the days with cold symptoms as those who didn’t walk
